Customer Service -- what does that mean?

Apparently the idea of customer service in the United States is passé.

I spent five hours on the phone with today with four different companies and accomplished a big, fat nothing.

To wit:
CINGULAR WIRELESS
I migrated over from AT&T Wireless after Cingular purchased AT&T and have had nothing but trouble for the six weeks since. I can honestly say Cingular has the worst customer service I have ever been subjected to, ever. If the Cingular customer service rep speaks understandable English, I always feel a faint glimmer of hope -- maybe, just maybe this person will understand me and be able to help. Sadly, that hope has been dashed time and time again. Either they're just learning a new software system or they're not sure what department handles what issues.

After six weeks and countless hours spent on hold, I still have two wireless phone lines that haven't been migrated and I don't have the two upgraded phones Cingular offered for migrating AT&T wireless lines. Does anyone have a cellular service provider they can actually recommend?

BELMONT & CRYSTAL SPRINGS WATER
Four tries to contact their customer service by phone and all I get is a phone that rings and rings and rings. An email to their online customer service resulted in this reply: "As a valued customer, your inquires [sic] are important to us and we will make every effort to ensure a quick response. If you require immediate assistance, please call customer service at 1-800-444-PURE."

Yep, that's the number that nobody answers.

VERIZON
They can disconnect service on my two normal business lines, but one of their subcontractors must disconnect the DSL line that I pay Verizon for -- but the subcontractor has no record that my business or I exist. They can do nothing.

PP&L ELECTRIC
Transferred FOUR times over 45 minutes before "losing me" in a transfer.

What's most troubling about these four customer service experiences? As far as I know, NONE of these four companies has outsourced customer service -- all of these incompetents live and work in the United States. AIEEEEEE!
